Websites and CDs

Music Downloads
Indiepad.com is a great site for independent musicians to post their music for download and start making money from their creative work. It's also a great place to find some really good music that you can't get anywhere else because the big distributors only promote a few artists.
This is my pick for best album of 2004. Great for sitting around and talking with friends. Great for driving. This band is amazing live and if you live in the U.S. it's even better. They play large venues everywhere else, but no one here really knows them so we get to see a great band at a small place. They don't come to the west coast very often, but when they do, I highly recommend them.

Marillion
Marbles

I bought this on a recommendation from another Rush fan. I found it to be a mixture of Rush (not afraid of a 10 minute song), Pink Floyd (great sound) and Radiohead (modern ambiance). When I bought the cd, I didn't know much about the band and that this was a single cd made from what was really a double cd. I liked it so much that I went back and bought the Double CD from the UK because you still couldn't get it in the states. The Double CD has some of the best songs (Ocean Cloud). If you are going to buy this, just get the Double CD. It's worth every penny (or is it pence?).

Bob Schneider
I'm Good Now

I saw Bob Schneider as an opening act at a House Of Blues show. I liked him enough to buy is CD I'm Good Now and love the cd. He was great and I decided to see him when he came back into town on his own venue. It was an incredible and fun show and I've seen him two or three times since then. His fist cd Lonelyland is also great.

Explicit lyrics. Be warned he uses the f-word and I don't mean frankincense.

Also, checkout his website, it's one of the best I have ever seen and you can listen to the entire I'm good now cd with commentary.

Past Shows

Marillion
Friday, September 9
Galaxy Theatre
Santa Ana

This is a very old band that has gone through an amazing transformation in the past few years. They were dead and couldn't afford to record. They created a website and asked fans to pre-purchase a cd that had not even been recorded. The response was tremendous and allowed them to record the cd and begin touring again. That was a few records ago. I purchased Marbles last year and it is a great cd.

I have my tickets.

Disappointing show. I love Marrillion, but the acoustic stuff didn't do much for me. Buy Marbles anyway, it's a great cd.

Hothouse Flowers
Thu, September 8, 2005
The Coach House
San Juan Capistrano
Wed, September 7, 2005
Belly Up Tavern
Solana Beach

If you make one show this year, this should be it. Period. Not to be missed. Especially when the ticket price is $13 (plus the evil $5.15 ticket master tax)!!! This is a great band that plays large venus everywhere outside the U.S. As you can see below, this was my pick for best recording of 2004. This is their first U.S. tour since releasing Into Your Heart. Just a short warning. Don't plan on being coherent the next day. The last time I saw them (2001?) at The Coach House, they didn't stop playing until 2:30am. It was by far the best show of that year, whatever year that was. Not to be missed. I learned about this last night and bought my tickets this morning.

I bought tickets for the San Diego show (a 1 hour drive) before I knew about the Coach House show, so I originally only planned on going to the Belly Up show. That show was incredible. A very small crowd was energized, dancing and singing to the most amazing sound you could imagine. Over powering soulful music. It still boggles my mind that I could buy tickets for $13 at the last minute for such a powerful band. Then shake hands and talk with the band before and after the show.

I called a bunch of friends and told everyone I was going to the Coach House and they should come along. I gave reference to the Belly Up review that said Hothouse Flowers was once called "The next U2.". During the first and second song I could see the jaws dropping on one of my friends. The sound was amazing. A few songs later, he leaned over and yelled. "They're better than U2!". I couldn't agree more, especially since I was highly disappointed in the latest U2 release. What was it called, "Just for Mone" or "How to disarm an atomic bomb"? Don't walk, run to your local music store and buy the latest Hothouse Flowers release. If you are disappointed, I'll buy it from you. It is that good. I never buy t-shirts at shows. After the last song the band was walking off stange and Liam stopped and said something about the merchandise and that you could buy a nice pink t-shirt. Someone yelled that they would buy one if they played "I'm Sorry.". Liam stopped dead, looked at the crowd, said "I'm not a slave!". Then turned back and walked to the keyboard. This was at 12:15 and they had already played 2 hours. The pink didn't match, so I bought a brown one. I think I got my $15 worth as far as the ticket price goes. I can only say, if you like music and Hothouse Flowers comes to town you should move heaven and earth to try and see them. The best two shows I have seen in the past five years.

Mike Peters
Tuesday August 23, 2005
House Of Blues, Anaheim

On Tuesday August 23, 2005. Mike Peters is playing at the House Of Blues in Anaheim. I've seen him more times than I can probably count. The Alarm was my favorite band growing up and I've been really lucky that Mike Peters reformed the band in 2000 and has always continued to record and tour. Always a great show.

Yesterday afternoon I finally decided to go. I walked up and bought a ticket at the last minute. The crowd was very light and Mike started soon after we arrived. Before the show there were song request forms lying on tables all around the area. I filled one out and requested "One Step Closer To Home". He played two sets entirely from the song requests. There were some oddball requests in there and a couple of songs that predated the Alarm. Overall, Mike Peter's rocked. Alone, by himself armed only with an Acoustic Guitar, he brought the small crowd into the show and everyone participated. Very Cool. Glad I went to support one of my favorite artists.

Bob Schneider
Friday, August 12, 2005
The Avalon
Hollywood

Bob is coming into town and opening for Shelby Lynn. I don't know her music, but Bob rocks (He's Batman) and I'm there. You have to love a musician that allows you to listen to his whole record on his website (with commentary) and sells live cds about 10 minutes after every show. Got my tickets, ready to rock! Oh, beware, explicit lyrics. He's quite crude in concert, but it's all very fun.

--- review ---

The venue changed at the last minute and Shelby Lynn opened for Bob Schneider. I don't know any of her material, but she wasn't very good. Someone we were talking to before the show who came to see Shelby Lynn said he didn't know any of the songs she played either and he owned a bunch of her CDs. Bob was good, but he cut the show short and wasn't as talkative and fun with the audience as he was the first time we saw him. I'm not sure why he cut it short, but it he didn't play Batman or keep that stiffie rollin which he has played every other time I have seen him. Slightly disappointed, but will probably give him another chance. On a side note, the keyboard player looked like he was about to pass out. Must have been a big party going on back stage and may be the cause of the short show?
